Wi-Fi Mesh is a wireless network system that significantly improves the coverage range of Wi-Fi signals. Espressif’s ESP-Mesh-Lite is a Wi-Fi Mesh networking solution based on the Wi-Fi protocol. It supports a large number of devices distributed in indoor and outdoor areas to connect to the same network. This solution provides users with fast, stable, and secure Wi-Fi coverage. ESP-Mesh-Lite is compatible with Espressif's Wi-Fi SoCs such as ESP32, ESP32-C, ESP32-S, and is suitable for automation scenarioses that require multi-device networking deployment and group control, including smart homes, smart irrigation, plant lighting, solar power generation, and more.

In the Espressif ESP-Mesh-Lite network, all terminal devices can connect to adjacent devices without being limited by the position and capacity of the router. This network architecture not only enables a wider Wi-Fi coverage area but also supports the connection of more devices.

Traditional Wi-Fi Network

In a traditional Wi-Fi network, all terminal devices need to be directly connected to the router when joining the network. This limits the coverage area of Wi-Fi to the locations of the router, and the number of devices that can be connected is also limited by the capacity of the router.

Terminal devices automatically connect to stronger signal nodes to form an ESP-Mesh-Lite network. When any node in the network disconnects, other nodes automatically reconnect, enabling network self-healing. This mechanism ensures that even if some devices in the mesh network fail, other devices can still maintain stable connectivity.

Devices in the ESP-Mesh-Lite network connect via Wi-Fi and they connect to each other. Compared to Thread, Zigbee, and Bluetooth Mesh networks, Wi-Fi connections offer higher network transmission and device communication rates. This makes the solution suitable for high-throughput scenarioses such as simultaneous device reporting and OTA.
